Easy To Make Garden Gazing Ball Stakes!

This is such a easy craft to do! Have fun with it…you can also try glow in the dark paint also….. I found the ping pong balls at the dollar store. I purchased the thinnest dowels they had at Walmart only .19 each. These ping pong balls are a bit thicker than regular ping pong balls…and that is even better. I used the Rustoleum Mirror Effectpaint on all to give it bling!

These are the dowels I purchased at Walmart: I tried to find these on their website, but I couldn’t find these. They are in the craft isle where wood crafts are. They are 36″long.

 

I took one of the skewers…. I had some left over from my mirror creation. With the sharp end I poked through the ball….It worked..I carefully stuck the skewer inside the ball. If you have thin ping pong balls, start the hole with something sharp first. These balls were okay.

(and if you ding the ball just use the skewer or the dowel and poke from inside to straighten out the ding.) Next I put all the balls on! If you happened to make the holes too big and the balls are sliding down, you can use a dab of glue, just make sure it is glue used for the outdoors. A silicone glue is best. E6000, is a good one for outdoors. They have to withstand water, and heat. So hot glue is not recommended.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

If you are placing these in a container plant, you can shorten the stakes.

I then stuck them in a chunk of styrofoam and sprayed the balls and stakes.

I waited overnight for them to dry, then I put them in my garden….bling! Tip: Be sure you have the balls positioned where you want them before painting, otherwise if re position them, you will have to paint the area where the ball was.
I was thinking of the sticks being put in the soil…and exposed to water…so I took a empty plant container (kind you get when you purchase a plant) and filled it with small rocks. You could use a empty food can also. Just make sure the circumference is large enough for the stakes to be put in at a good angle.
I didn’t have a wide enough can so I used the empty plant container. I filled with rocks.

I realized the pot would have to be higher than the ground surface. I didn’t really want the top of the pot sticking out, so I glued on some marbles around the perimeter. I then buried the pot up to the rim.

Then I thought…I think I will fill the top with the vase fillers (The glass fillers you can purchase at the dollar store.) This is what it looked like when it was finished…

So what do you think? You don’t have to worry about the sticks getting in water. The bottom of pot has holes, so if water does get in the there, it will travel through the rocks and drain into ground underneath pot.

Now I know some readers are wondering how they would look with bright colors….so here it is in Hot Pink, Neon Yellow, Apple Green, and some turquoise and blue…

And now you paint the balls in any color you want. Be sure it is Outdoor Paint. when the Paint has dried, I sprayed them with 2 coats of Rust oleum Clear Coat. That will help protect them in the elements. This patio paint is less than $2 at Walmart

 

I had just painted the front doors a gorgeous blue, (actually I liked the blue in the balls, so I had the paint mixed to match. So I then placed it inside a pot by my front door.

The first week, I noticed some neighbors looking really hard trying to see from a distance what they were. So many people have commented on them. When there is a breeze they move ever so gently…

This is a very easy, inexpensive, project that will add so much color to your garden. Wouldn’t these look pretty near a water feature?
