How To Arrange Living Room Furniture

I have been asked by friends on so many occasions how to arrange their furniture. Our homes come in all different shapes and sizes. No matter if your rooms are big or small your furniture arrangement will make your room more enjoyable.

I started with the pic only above because of the pillow on the sofa…..does it look like my rug??

Let’s start with the long room and only entry at one end.

There is no need to crowd your furniture. Leave room for traffic and an entry drop spot. Your cozy main seating pieces should be up to the fireplace facing each other. Use end tables as landing spaces on both ends of the sofa. Pair chairs to balance the visual weight of the sofa and to maximize seating. Notice the cozy setting on the other end of the room.

But what happens if you don’t have free walls? Well, you then float the furniture in the center of the room:

You then anchor it down with a rug and coffee table in the center. Notice the cozy seating arrangement is lined up with the fireplace. There are two chairs facing a sofa. This encourages conversation.  Now you frame the room with storage cabinets, and cozy seating with a couple of chairs and console in between.

Now if your living room doesn’t have a fireplace, just arrange the seating so it takes advantage of whatever view your room has to offer, whether it’s a TV or a beautiful wall of windows. You can create a vignette of favorite objects on a console or a bookshelf.

I picked the picture below because of the end table. It looks like a upholstered base. Be on the lookout people….that is a future project for me!! I have the perfect base to work on!!!

Always arrange your room for conversation. Seating across from each other. Be sure to allow for traffic patterns. Your coffee table should be about 18″ from the sofa.

Entertainment Seating:

Place your television and computer so the screens face away from the sunlight. The viewing distance for a standard TV is 8 to 12 feet, and the best viewing angle is not more than 30 degrees. For traffic flow, create paths that flow behind viewers and not between them and the screen

Need more storage in your living room??? If you have a larger room you should use wall-to-wall built-ins and a smaller room freestanding pieces. Make sure there is some storage near the TV, if you have kiddos, this is a must!

Notice the storage difference in size of the two rooms above.

Notice how the round pedestal tables below give more space to walk around .When space is tight, use nesting tables for flexible use when needed.

  3. Terrific advice, darling! But don’t you find that crown molding only works with high ceilings? When the ceiling is on the low side and the walls are “wall-to-wall” paintings, I think crown molding will only make rooms visually smaller. What do you think?

      1. Also, I have archways with decorative Art Deco moldings, so it would definitely be too crowded. Baseboards and fireplaces follow the same motif as the archway moldings. When I designed all that, I was trying to keep it in the same Art Deco style, as the building itself.

      3. Ha! When we bought it, it was a shell, or, rather, two shells of two one-bedroom apartments under reconstruction. We didn’t even have a ceiling, and the AC unit was openly hanging over our heads! We broke through the wall and connected both into a two-bedroom. Then we changed floor plan. The architecture is built in because I designed it, and my father-in-law (may he rest in peace), who was an architect, came down here before closing, to examine how my design will fit into the construction reality of an Art Deco building.
        As to the kitchen floor, unfortunately, I actively dislike it. I made a costly mistake because I wanted to save, and it ended up looking like a patch quilt. It’ll have to be redone at a later time. Dining room and bathroom floors are gorgeous, though, and I am waiting for my husband to finish refinishing under-the-sink cabinet to take pics.

      4. Why don’t you paint the floor? If you use the right paint…and top coat, it will be gorgeous. Plus, you could stencil a design if you want. The paint is so tough, you can drive a car on it.

      7. I know, and that’s what we did with archway moldings and baseboards, but it has to be tile on the kitchen floor. They didn’t paint floors during Art Deco years. It was either tile or mosaic, and I had gorgeous Florentine ceramic tile that LOOKED like mosaic. But I had bought it at a closeout originally, and I couldn’t find anything even close to that within my price range. That’s ok, we’ll find the right thing when the time comes; meanwhile, it’s safe and serviceable.

      19. Reporting: I messed up! I couldn’t find lace and ran out of time, so I opted for paper doilies ( a package of 32 for $1!), and instead of sugar powder, I dusted the cake through a doilie with cocoa powder. I am sure it will be delicious – we’ll see tomorrow! – and it looks pretty, but no intricate pattern is discernible. Back to looking for real lace!

      27. We had so much fun. Bunch of kids was playing with us hide and seek tag. Of course I was it most of the time. Trying to catch the kids on the playground was hard, my boot kept getting those bark things inside! 😂❤️️😍

  5. I love this guide and it will be handy for future reference. I am moving to Colorado this spring and will be moving from a house to a small apartment so I appreciate space arrangement ideas!

      1. You are more than welcome!! My husband and I actually purchased his grandparent’s family home. It was built in the early 50’s and has so much potential! I find so much comfort to this older home! I will definitely reach out to you when I have some fabulous designer questions!

      7. Both the countertops and cabinets are very old! Our townhouse we just sold had Cherry cabinets and they were beautiful! We saw a countertop at Lowe’s that we both loved. It was black with sparkles in it! Although, considering the kitchen isn’t very big, maybe black is a bad idea. Honestly, I was to tear the kitchen apart and start over!!

      9. I am relatively cheap with things so I will definitely save money. I am not sure what kind of counters we have currently, but I think they have been the same since the house was built by my husband’s great grandfather in the early 50’s. I am not one that likes or wants expensive things, but I do want them to look a lot better and I need more counter space. The good thing is, which this will sound strange, we don’t even have a stove at this point. The kitchen is almost like a empty space!

      12. All these projects are first times for me Alyssa. Believe me when I say it is easy to do! For less than 100.00 I refinshed a bath tub, sink and countertop in the bathroom. Pretty darn good savings!!!!

      25. It sounds like y’all are both very lucky to have one another!! My husband and I do not have human children, but we do have 2 cats. We treat our cats like children! My doctor told me many years ago that where I have lesions on my spine, it would be hard to carry a child, so we decided to not even try.
