Frogs Strumming Bass

I have had these two frog for a few years….they were in sad shape! I was a bit bored and thought this would be a fun project that was easy to do and added lots of whimsy to your gardens! You can do the same to any outdoor statues, decor, fountains, etc.

They look pretty sad don’t they!?! Well, here they are all jazzed up!

What a difference a little paint and glass fillers can do! Here is how I did it:

I decided to make one a lady and the other a man. I used a red sharpie for the lips of the one frog. I used Goop to glue the shiny pearls on her guitar. I wanted the male to have a cool blue. The small green pkgs with the black net have the plain (non shiny) kind of look like pale sea glass gems .The bag of gems I purchased at Walmart.

To give the gems (ones from Dollar Tree a crystallized look, I baked them on a cookie sheet at 500 degrees for 20 minutes. This is the same as we used to do with marbles…way back when.

After 20 minutes, I carefully, (the gems and pan are very hot) let them drop into a bowl of ice water I had ready for them, and you can put the sheet on top of bowl with ice…just to be safe.

A couple of them didn’t make the bowl…ouch, they were hot!

I first started out by painting their bodies with a green spray paint from Rustoleum 2x. Great for outside. I used the darker round blue for the males guitar. I used the flat green gems for their bodies.

For the mouth I used stones of same color that didn’t sparkle.

I used the flat ones for the bodies and mouths of the frogs. I used the round gems for their guitars.

I painted the girls tongue yellow….Put in the turquoise eyes. I didn’t have enough of the turquoise gems,“>Dollar Tree only had the two packs. I plan to get more of the turquoise…10 bags….make a pond shape where they are standing in the roses and fill it in with the turquoise and green gems..I think that will look so pretty and sparkly…

I think my brain was working in overdrive, or I was just bored. I wanted to make a faux pond for them. I had it all set up in the rose garden, but I couldn’t see it from the house the way it was situated. So back to the drawing board. Now in the meantime while I was trying to figure out a place for it, another idea struck…a pallet I had…I painted a pallet in blue colors…

I love those colors! I was going to make it a herb planter. But then a idea struck! Since the frogs were ready, I could make this a neat backdrop for them. Then I thought of making it a billboard with their stage names on it. I made the letters with the glass gems from the dollar store.

I remember seeing a sign in the dog section at a store, that I loved. It said’ Sandy Paws and Salty Kisses’. It reminds me of the beach and my doggies…so that’s their names. LOL
Next week I am having a pool put in. I want the frogs by one area of the pool…this will look so cute by it, and warms up a corner. I decided to put it up temporary to see how it looked. I had added a net, shells, pearls, starfish and seahorses

I gathered the blue plastic tarp I had purchased at Walmart…$3….I racked away the small stones, and cut a oval shape, kinda. I added some gems to the pond…some rocks, Frog King, etc.
lots of fans!!!

This is how it will sit for the next couple of weeks. I did put a solar spotlight on it for nighttime performances. It is positioned so when your sitting under the pergola, it’s like they are performing for you! Imagination sparks creativity!
I think I am going to add some color to the fans!!!
So what do you think? Did I give you any ideas?

  3. How cute! And totally a propos, we went to Key Largo yesterday, and there are quite a few properties all along the keys, but not necessarily on Key West which is horrendously expensive. Perhaps you could look into those…

  4. Oh my so cute Kelley. I love the idea of the blue tarp for water, I have been racking my brain trying to figure out how to make a little pond. I have wooden bridge to go across it and frogs and turtle stepping stones. I can’t wait to do this one. Thanks so much Kelley.

    1. Your so welcome Patty. I later added a bunch of bags of those vase fillers at the Dollar Tree. I purchased the blues and turquoises…put them in the oven to crack…and placed them on the tarp!

      1. Kelley, I bet that looks so pretty, I would love to see a picture. I made a beach one time for one of my fairy gardens using a mirror and coated that with this stuff I bought at the craft store in the kids section. Then I made waves with mod podge and sprinkled with glitter, then another coat of the water looking stuff it turned out so good, but to do that with a bigger project would cost to much money, way too much.

      2. LOL! No I’m not very creative, but once in awhile I get lucky. I will take a picture when my husband comes in off the road, he took the camera with him, he wanted to take some pictures of something.
